My New Favorite Riding Gear

The jacket and trousers are called Torreso from the Scandinavian company Dane (say Dahn-eh, not Dain). They were the test-winners in a comparo of high-end textile suits in Motorrad magazine a few years ago. The Torreso was replaced by a new suit last year that I found over-complicated (and ugly) so I snatched up the last Torreso I could find in my size before it became unobtainable. At the time I also tried the BMW and Stadler (same as TT) suits, along with every other brand I could, like IXS, Rukka, Difi, and many more.

The BMW and Stadler reeked of high-quality materials, but I felt they had some niggles which were ill-thought-out, like placement of arm straps, neck closures, and more. The Dane fit me like it was tailored, and I liked all the many details they got right -- like the number and location of vents, including a full-length arm vent that’s on the inseam side of the arm from wrist to armpit (and not wrist to mid-shoulder which catches too much wind, like my old Held jacket did). And instead of big bicep straps that keep it from flapping, it’s got an integral elastic band with a slider, like you find on hiking pants. Also, it has a magnetic neck closure which, unlike Velcro, never grabs the helmet straps and never chokes you -- it just pops loose if your neck position pushes on it hard enough, and then it simply swings itself closed and stays there. Good details!

The liners are made from Outlast and Gore-Tex, which makes life comfortable across a wide range of temps from mid-single digits (C) up to about 23C, at which point it starts getting too warm -- but thanks to those space-age materials, never muggy. With the liner out and vents open it’s good up into the 30’s at which point no suit can keep you cool. It has enough reflectors built in that you don’t need a safety vest at night, the pockets are abundant and useful, including the two big front pockets which are waterproof and easily swallow -- and keep dry -- your wallet and phone.

And – fashonistas take this tip – at the recent ride-in event at Touratech, while I was definitely in the appropriate Uniform of the Day, I was the only guy there sporting Dane in a sea of Stadler, TT Companero, BMW, Rukka, Hein-Gericke, and Polo Pharao (the popular discount suit). How embarrassing would it be to wear the same adventure suit to the moto-soiree as someone else!
